A weekend to make your home safer

Smoke alarms, extinguisher, power strips and shut-offs in half a day.

Most risks at home can be reduced with a few items and a single walk-through. Follow the order below, starting with what is free.

  1. Check your power strips and cables and throw away any that are damaged or scorched (free)
  2. Find the breaker box, main water valve and gas valve, and take photos of them (free)
  3. Install smoke alarms near bedrooms and hallways, then press the test button
  4. Place a fire extinguisher near the kitchen but not right next to the stove, and read the instructions on the label
  5. Set a calendar reminder to test the smoke alarms every month
